FAQ

Here are answers to some frequently asked questions. If you don't find what you are looking for, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Do I need my own video camera?

Students are encouraged to bring their own video camera, because it is best to learn how to use equipment that will be available to you after the workshop ends. For those who do not have a video camera, you are welcome to work in a team with another participant that has one.

Do I need my own computer?

Yes, it is best to bring your own computer. We prefer to teach using a Mac-based workflow, with iMovie '13 or newer as the editing software standard. Some instruction will involve the Final Cut Pro software package as well. (We are familiar with PCs, and do not require students to use Macs. We recommend that PC users acquire a reasonably powerful PC video editing software package). As a minimum hardware standard, we recommend 2Ghz Intel-based Mac with 2 GB of RAM. We strongly recommend that participants bring an external hard drive to back up footage and project files.

Can I rent a Mac from ScienceFilm?

Yes, we have several rental Mac laptops available, please contact us to inquire about pricing and availability.

What is a typical day like?

Each day is geared towards a particular topic, but most follow a typical structure: We usually start off with two lectures after breakfast, and then send you out to experiment with a camera assignment that puts into practice the morning lecture material. In the afternoon, we have a practical lab using the computers (footage management, editing, titling, audio, output, etc.). You then spend the mid afternoon working on your morning footage, and then we have a screening before dinner to discuss everyone’s work. Most evenings will be spent viewing and critiquing ‘professional’ natural history documentaries. In the latter half of the course, more emphasis will be placed upon working on your own film.

Is there a textbook?

There is no required text, but if you want some recommended reading, click here.

Do you have discounts or scholarships for graduate students?

Unfortunately we are not in a position to offer discounts or scholarships to graduate students. Sorry.

Can you accommodate my special dietary needs?

In most cases this is not a problem. If we are providing meals as part of the workshop, we can usually forward your request to the head of the dining facility and let you know ahead of time.

Can I have my own room in the housing facilities?

The answer to this question depends on availability at the facilities that we are staying at. If there is room to accommodate your request, we are happy to do so, but there may be an extra charge to stay in a single room. Please contact us with your request and we will attempt to meet your needs.
